Enemies range from challenging foes that require focus and strategy, to weak underlings that fall quickly and satisfactorily beneath your weapons and skills. The environment quickly turns against you, and your struggle to survive is accentuated by the abundance of fire and oil, with barely any way to find safety. It quickly becomes apparent that the enemies you see are but the first wave, and you're in for a long fight. You're on the top of a large pyramid of platforms, and when battle starts, you find yourself suddenly surrounded. In the masterpiece that is DOS2, the Gwydian encounter SHOULD be among the most satisfying battle set-pieces in the game. I was thinking of making a similar post, though with the opposite conclusion. TL DR: Gwydian's in-game stupidity is actually deliberate because he was written to be a moron who is literally too dumb to live, and undeserving of life even if you do somehow defy all odds to save him. In future playthroughs I am going to let the Magister gut you.

Was turning the entire area into a necrofire-infused voidwoken-infested hellhole really necessary? No, I don't think it was. There were only like three or four magisters overseeing your execution. Just went: "Haha Source go fwoosh fwoosh." Dozens of Voidwoken immediately appeared, some of which are literally on fire, and mass pandemonium ensues. Source! Has he learned nothing!? Of course he hasn't. What does this genius immediately do? He uses Source. You fight your way to the oil tower thing, where you see Gwydian strung up. You've been asked to save Gwydian, by both his family and by his teacher. But nooo, Gwydian just had to spray his Source juice around like he's in some sort of pissing contest and endanger everyone he ever loved in the process. Or at least, nowhere near as bad as it ended up being. Which resulted in the deaths of countless villagers, with the cruel magisters using the incident as a pretext to execute the rest.īut if Gwydian had just given himself up, or tried to fight back without using Source, then this entire incident could have been avoided. Surprise surprise Voidwoken showed up!Ī massive three-way fight ensued between the villagers, the Magisters, and the Voidwoken. Despite the fact that it's common knowledge that using Source attracts Voidwoken. So what does this cunning mastermind do? He used his Source powers. Given the sheer size of this particular unit, it's safe to assume that even with Source powers he didn't did a chance. Unsurprisingly, they decided to apprehend him. So basically, what happened in the Black Pits was that the Magisters discovered that Gwydian was a Sourceror. A drooling simpleton with an IQ of approximately negative twelve thousand.

Some might call this bad design.īut you know what? It's actually a brilliant design. His insistence on going on a suicidal jog through necrofire despite being perfectly safe, or on casting lightning spells on your own characters, have been rather irritating to say the least.

In looking up various guides I have come to understand that Gwydien incites a lot of rage in many players. Now, I'm on my first playthrough, and I did just clear the Black Pits, so I might be a bit uninformed. Vendor Prices, Bartering & Attitude Formulaĭo you all remember Gwydian?
